Rice (1897) gives the Tumkur District caste figures for 1891: 'Komatis number 5,304' - the largest recorded Komati population of any district in the old Mysore State, ahead of Bangalore District's 4,766 - and the district also contains Gubbi. Today a cluster of three Vasavi-named educational institutions (a PU college, a Vidya Pitha and a Vidya Mandira) sits within about 1.5 km in the city, the typical footprint of an Arya Vysya education trust.
