Nellore

Metro Nellore district Andhra Pradesh 558,548 in 2011
District headquarters; Nellore Municipal Corporation constituted 2004. Wikipedia's Nellore article, citing John Boswell's A Manual of the Nellore District (Government Press, 1873), records that the British recognised Nellore's importance in cultivation and as the site of the important port of Krishnapatnam, and lists the leading landholding families of the 1800s, among them 'The Chettiars Polighar' - a merchant-caste title. This is the clearest documented mercantile reference for the district.
