District headquarters; Ongole Municipal Corporation constituted 2012. Wikipedia's Ongole article states the city is 'a major center for tobacco trading in Andhra Pradesh'. The 1873 Nellore Manual lists 'Zamindhars of Ongole' among the leading families of the region. A Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari temple is reported in Ongole on a street carrying the temple's name, but no government, census or established community-organisation source could be confirmed for it, so it is not recorded as an institution.
