Motupalli
Village
Bapatla district
Andhra Pradesh
MERCHANT CHARTER SITE. Medieval seaport, now a village in Chinnaganjam mandal. The Kakatiya ruler Ganapatideva issued the Motupalli Abhaya Sasanam here, dated 1244-45 CE, carved in Telugu and Sanskrit on a pillar of the mandapa in front of the Veerabhadra Swamy temple; it guaranteed sea-borne merchants the security of their cargo and a fixed, minimal duty. It is the best-documented medieval merchant-protection charter in the belt. NOTE ON DISTRICT: older sources (e.g. a 2016 blog and pre-2022 references) place Motupalli in Prakasam district; after the 26 January 2022 reorganisation Chinnaganjam mandal falls in Bapatla district. Both assignments appear in sources.
