Taluk headquarters, built by Krishnadevaraya between 1509 and 1520 as Nagalapur and described by the 1904 Bellary Gazetteer as 'the entrance gate, as it were, to the city of Vijayanagar for all travellers coming up from Goa and the west coast'; population 18,482. The Komati guru's math at Narayanadevarakeri lies in this taluk. A Sri Vasavi Kalyana Mantapa stands on Hampi Road today.
